Yerevan Budget Guide: Armenia's Pink City for $28/Day

Yerevan is one of the world's oldest cities, built from pink volcanic stone with Mount Ararat as its backdrop. Here's how to see it properly without overspending.

Yerevan rarely makes Western travel itineraries, which is a gift to those who do go. The Armenian capital is ancient (founded in 782 BC), architecturally striking, and oriented around a coffee-and-conversation culture that makes it immediately likeable. Prices are low, people are welcoming, and the history is extraordinary.

Getting Around

Yerevan has a small but useful metro (one line, 10 stations, $0.30/ride) and an extensive marshrutka network. Most of the city centre is walkable in 30–40 minutes. Bolt and Yandex taxis are cheap — cross-city rides rarely exceed $3.

The Cascade

The Cascade is Yerevan's defining landmark — a massive Soviet-era staircase complex connecting the city centre to a hilltop park, lined with contemporary sculpture and flanked by the Cafesjian Museum (partially free). Climb it for views of the city and, on clear days, the snow-capped cone of Mount Ararat rising dramatically across the Turkish border. Free, and unmissable.

Republic Square

The central square is one of the finest examples of Soviet-era architecture — grand pink tuff stone buildings in a neo-classical style surrounding a fountained plaza. The musical fountain show (evenings in summer) is free and a genuine local institution.

Garni & Geghard Day Trip

The single best day trip from Yerevan visits two sites: the Pagan Temple of Garni (Armenia's only preserved Greco-Roman structure, dating to the 1st century AD) and the UNESCO-listed Geghard Monastery, partly carved into a cliff face in the 4th century. A shared taxi from Yerevan to both sites and back costs $12–15 split between passengers — join the marshrutka queue outside Yerevan's Zoravor Church on Sunday mornings.

Brandy & Food

The Ararat Brandy Factory offers tours and tastings from $5 — you taste three brandies aged 3, 5, and 10 years, and the history of Armenian cognac (it predates French cognac by decades) is fascinating. For food, try khorovats (Armenian barbecue), dolma (stuffed grape leaves), and the extraordinary fresh herb and cheese plates that accompany almost every meal.

Daily Budget

  • Accommodation: $10–15 (hostel dorm or budget guesthouse)
  • Food: $8–10
  • Transport: $3
  • Activities: $5
  • Total: $26–33/day
