Sofia rarely appears on European travel bucket lists, which is exactly why it's worth going. The Bulgarian capital has excellent food, a walkable centre packed with 2,000 years of history, a mountain you can hike up within city limits, and prices that would make any Western European traveller weep with relief.
Getting Around Sofia
Sofia has an excellent tram network and two metro lines. A single ride costs $0.80 (BGN 1.60). Day passes are available for $2.50. The Sofia Card (24/48/72hr) covers all public transport including the route up to Vitosha Mountain and gives free or discounted museum entry.
The city centre is very walkable — most sights in the central area are within 15 minutes on foot.
The Must-See Triangle
Within a 200-metre radius of the TZUM shopping centre, you'll find the Saint Nedelya Orthodox Cathedral, the Banya Bashi Ottoman Mosque (one of the oldest functioning mosques in Europe), and the magnificent Sofia Synagogue. Three major religious buildings of different faiths, essentially side by side — and all free to visit.
Vitosha Mountain
Vitosha National Park starts at the edge of the city. Tram 5 from the centre takes you to the base in 30 minutes. From there you can hike to Cherni Vrah (Black Peak, 2,290m) and be back in the city for dinner. The entire trip — including tram fare — costs under $4. This is genuinely world-class hiking accessible from a European capital.
Day Trip: Plovdiv
Plovdiv is a strong contender for Bulgaria's most beautiful city. The Old Town (Stariyat Grad) sits on three hills above the modern city, with Roman ruins, Ottoman houses, art galleries, and the best restaurant scene outside Sofia. Trains run hourly from Sofia ($4, 2hrs). One full day is ideal.
Where to Eat
Central Market Hall (Zhenski Pazar) is where locals buy fresh produce and prepared food. The women's market is a sensory overload in the best way and you can eat extremely well for $2–3. Restaurant set lunches (business lunch menus) go for $4–6 and are invariably excellent.
Try banitsa (filo pastry with cheese or spinach, $0.60–1.00), kebapche (grilled minced meat, $2), and shopska salad (tomato/cucumber/white cheese, $2–3).
