Packing light saves money (no checked bag fees on budget airlines), saves time (no waiting at baggage claim), and makes travel less stressful. Here is everything you need for a 2-week to 2-month trip in a 40L daypack.
The Bag
A 36–44L backpack that fits in aircraft overhead bins (most budget airline carry-on limits). Osprey, Nomatic, and Tortuga make excellent options. The bag itself is not where to cheap out — buy once, use for a decade.
Clothing: The Actual Minimum
- 4–5 t-shirts / tops (merino wool dries fast and doesn't smell)
- 2 pairs of trousers/shorts (one smart, one casual)
- 1 lightweight jacket or fleece
- 1 rain jacket (packable)
- 4–5 pairs underwear (merino again)
- 3–4 pairs socks
- 1 pair walking shoes (comfortable enough for 15km days)
- 1 pair sandals / flip-flops
If you're going to a conservative country or religious sites, add one smarter item (collared shirt, long skirt). That's it. The laundry problem solves itself — every hostel has a washing machine or a sink.
Electronics
- Phone + charger + power bank
- Universal travel adapter
- Earbuds (for flights and hostel dorms)
- Laptop or tablet if you're working remotely
You don't need a camera — modern smartphone cameras are extraordinary. You don't need a tablet AND a laptop. Pick one.
Toiletries
Buy almost all toiletries at your destination — shampoo, toothpaste, sunscreen weigh a lot and are available everywhere. Bring: small deodorant, any prescription medication (with the script), and a microfibre towel (most hostels provide towels but not all).
What to Leave Behind
- A hairdryer (provided in every hotel, available in pharmacies for $5)
- More than 2 books (e-readers exist)
- A full-size first aid kit (pharmacy basics suffice)
- "Just in case" clothing you've never worn at home
- Your comfort object that weighs 800g
